Perth Mess Hall is Perth's 1st permanent food truck park

Perth’s first permanent food truck park is set to tantalise people’s tastebuds when it opens tomorrow night.

The Perth Mess Hall will take over the Old Swan Barracks every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, starting May 10.

A massive line up of Perth’s favourite mobile food vendors will rotate, offering Mess Hall diners a different range of cuisines each night, as well as tap beers from Gage Roads and Matso’s at the premises’ fixed bar.People will get the chance to dine on their favourite mobile food fans at the Perth Mess Hall from May 10.Picture: Perth Mess Hall

Event organiser Todd Kempton, who runs his own food truck and is a chef by trade, said the vendors were excited to come together in a purpose-designed space.

The 1000-capacity venue will be “very different to the normal food truck experience”, with tables and chairs, pool tables and shelter provided.

Mr Kempton said he pitched the idea about one year ago after the owners of the building were chasing a venture that would activate the space and make it vibrant.

The venue mirrors similar spaces on Australia’s east cost, such as Melbourne’s Welcome to Thornbury. The former car manufacturing factory became Melbourne’s first permanent bar and food truck stop in 2015 — and has been a popular food-lovers destination since.

The Old Swan Barracks will play host to the Perth Mess Hall

WA Mobile Food Vendors Association president Craig Mauger said its members were “quite excited for the next evolution of the food truck market”.

He said in the past food trucks had been pushed to the periphery of the city but the opening of the Perth Mess Hall would allow more people to enjoy the food on offer.

Mr Mauger encourages lovers of food trucks to get down and support it.

Mr Kempton said one visit would not be enough and expected as the popularity for the venue grew so too would their list of vendors and they days they open.
