Tourist issues urgent warning to Australian travellers after finding a 'very concerning' detail on his duty-free alcohol receipt - and reveals why you should NEVER throw them away

Tourist issues warning to travellers in Asia buying items at duty-free

Perth man Colin Ahearn was travelling from Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur to Phuket in Thailand when he decided to buy some of his favourite duty-free alcohol at the international airport.

Mr Ahearn was about to throw the receipt for the two bottles - Wild Turkey American Honey Liqueur and Smirnoff Red Label Vodka for his wife - when he was stopped by his eagle-eyed partner.

Tracey Ahearn noticed a peculiar addition to the bottom of the docket - her husband's name, date of birth and passport number.

Tourist issues warning after finding 'concerning' detail on receipt

Perth man Colin Ahearn (pictured with wife Tracey) was travelling from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Phuket, Thailand, when he decided to buy some of his favourite duty-free alcohol

'I was about to throw the duty free bag out along with the receipt, Trace looked at it and said "look what information is printed on it!"' Mr Ahearn wrote with a video he shared to Facebook.

'If you just throw this in the bin, it's got your passport number, your full name, your nationality, your date of birth, when your passport expires, where you're flying out of.'

'Essentially if someone goes through and finds that information, they've got your full passport details.

'Not a good thing to have your passport number just floating in the bin on a piece of paper.'

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia about the revelation, Mr Ahearn said he had never seen anything like it.

Mr Ahearn was about to throw the receipt in the bin in common practice when he was abruptly stopped by his eagle-eyed wife Tracey (pictured). She noticed a peculiar addition to the bottom of the docket - her husband's name, date of birth and passport number

'We travel every 10 weeks and have never once noticed that information,' he said.
