Aboutsource On these beautiful, balmy summers days take a drive to the South Perth foreshore and visit the new Mends Street jetty piazza. There are 2 giant canopies in the shape of a frilled neck lizard and a numbat which welcome visitors from the ferry to South Perth, Perth Zoo and the beautiful foreshore of the Swan River. The Piazza has other artworks (I just love the meerkats), along with a huge seating and lighting area where you can relax and enjoy the view of the Swan River and city skyline.  There is a family of adorable Meerkats on the jetty wall and standing on benches along Mends Street which lead visitor in the direction of the Zoo. The Meerkats are made of crochet polypropylene and created by artist Michaela Castledine.  There are 3 sturdy sculptures of emus, being a family of two adult emus and one chick. The children love interacting with them. Next to the emus is a playground which is due to be completed 15th December 2019 when the City of South Perth presents Christmas Carols at Sunset. It weighs approximately 5.5 tonnes and is 23.5 m long, 6.5m tall and 5.6m wide. The canopies light up as the sun goes down. At night, people sit and relax on the benches, taking in the stunning view of the city lights and breathtaking reflections on the water.  Enjoy a coffee, drink or meal at Mister Walker Restaurant. Try the Ocean platter or kangaroo loin and rose gin. The menu accommodates for people with allergens.  The Paddle Steamer Decoy is available for tours, special functions and live music cruises. The best way to view the Swan River.  There is a large seating area with benches, a grassed area with young trees, and wooden tables with colourful orange umbrellas for shade.  The walk along the foreshore is an easy walk. Many families, local residents and overseas visitors taking a stroll enjoying the river and city views, along with joggers, cyclists, people in wheelchairs and even a wedding party.  Mends Street, South Perth has some unique little cafes and shops. Try the French cafe “La Patisserie”. Delicious French pastries, tarts, crepes, french toast, quiches and sausages rolls. Opens early for breakfast 6am. Next door is Saigon Eats which serves a variety of South-East Asian foods. Across the road is Health Freak cafe and Gelare for icecream, smoothies and low fat frozen yogurt, my favourite.  I love the city lights from South Perth. Sitting on the water’s edge at night is very relaxing and peaceful, almost meditative. Take a stroll to the Narrows bridge. You will find a few people fishing while opportunistic Herons feed on anything within striking distance.
