Canning Highway) as a major thoroughfare, and the rapid expansion of the residential areas of
Kensington and Como, two hotels were established - the Hurlingham Hotel (1930-2004) and the
Como Hotel built in 1939.
The Como Hotel was originally constructed to serve the residents of, and visitors to, the rapidly
growing district. In the early part of the twentieth century, largely due to their riverside location,
Como and South Perth proved very popular with picnickers and holiday makers. By the late 1930s,
these suburbs were rapidly developing as a popular choice of residence. At that time, a new hotel for
the residents and the steady stream of visitors was deemed increasingly necessary. The Como Hotel was built for licensee Mr A E Dolin. Designed by well-known architects Oldham,
Boas and Ednie-Browne, the hotel was constructed by builder E Allwood for a sum of 20,000 pounds
In 1965, following the trend of other hotels in Perth, a drive-in bottle shop was added. In the 1990s, the Como Hotel underwent changes to meet contemporary demands in hotels. The
refurbishment maintained the original saloon bar, but the changes included a modern dining setting
opening out on to the original beer garden. The décor was ‘retro’ 1960s, with strong colours and
chrome furniture. The external colours were changed to purple and silver.
