It is approximately 20 hectares in size Blackwall Reach is a 500m stretch of cliffs situated near Point Walter on the lower Swan River in Bicton, just ten minutes from Fremantle. The cliffs reach up to 11 metres above water whilst plunging to depths of 25 metres below the salt water surface. The jumps are relatively safe, as long as you stick to the places everyone else has jumped from. Nature reserve, trails, cliffs, popular recreational zone along the Swan river Blackwall Reach (Jenalup in Noongar) is a section of the Swan River in Western Australia. Blackwall Reach was named after an area of the River Thames near Greenwich UK in 1896 by Commander L. S. Dawson RN, Admiralty Surveyor. The name originally referred to that part of the river, rather than either side, but this changed in the twentieth century when the riverside land on the eastern bank just south of Point Walter was specifically called Blackwall Reach. It contains limestone cliffs, and remnant vegetation adjacent to the river's edge. The location is a popular spot for cliff jumping and for rock climbing. However, since the creation and management of the clifftop reserve, signage advises against jumping. Non-adherence to this signage has resulted in fatalities. Due to its location close to the ocean, unusual fish catches have sometimes occurred. Prior to European settlement, the area was known to the Noongar indigenous people as Jenalup, a sacred place linked to the Dreaming stories. Due to its location and geography, Blackwall Reach is a Fishing hotspot. The deep river water in close proximity to the ocean means many unusual catches have been reeled in - including Crayfish and big Dhufish. You are likely to hook good size Black Bream, Pinkies, Tarwhine. Mulloway and Flathead. Crabs are plentiful in it's depths, just be sure to get baits deep to avoid the worst of the blowies. Live bait, prawns or fresh fillets work best. DOLPHINS GALORE They often get very close to the cliffs edge and stick around for hours eating and playing in big groups, they are regular swimming passively within touching distance of us. ![]() History: Blackwall Reach Reserve has been Crown land since the late 1800’s. Commander L. S. Dawson R. N. Admiralty Surveyor named the area Blackwall Reach in 1896 – probably after Blackwall Reach on theThames River near Greenwich. Check in S.M.
