Hopscotch

Top

The liveliness of children at play is expressed in the whimsical tableau of children playing the time-honoured game of hopscotch.

Designed by Charlie and Joan Smith to coincide with the Year of the Family in 1994, the sculpture captures the mood of a bygone age and forms an historic link to the past.

It's also an interactive artwork just waiting for you to join the game as you take the heritage trail!

The sculpture expresses the happy theme of a family group enjoying a traditional pastime, which still today can be enjoyed by children of all ages. Participation is encouraged, with the hopscotch rules explained on the nearby sign. Even in an age of electronic amusements, Hopscotch shows that children can recapture the mood and magic of a by-gone era with joyful activity linking past and present.
