BURYALUP
The traditional hunting and fishing grounds of the BALLARUK

Fish traps used to be laid on the shallows of the Swan river in
between Canning bridge and Como beach.
The whole area was known as BURYALUP.

Statement of Significance

The Mill Point Reserve has aesthetic, historic, social and representative cultural heritage significance. The area has strong links with the traditional Aboriginal way of life through descendants of the Ballaruk people. In the Twentieth Century the Reserve was developed along with the Narrows Bridge leading to a number of physical changes at the Point. Today (2005) the Reserve is visited by many people who walk, rollerblade and ride along the foreshore appreciating the river and city views. Fishing is still a popular recreational pursuit in the reserve.

Physical Description

The Mill Point Reserve is situated under and near where the Narrows Bridge joins the land at South Perth. The area is landscaped with large expanses of lawn and a few trees, it is often visited by walkers, bicyclists and fishermen. The Main Roads Department erected a plaque on a small limestone plinth that blends into the landscape.

History

Mill Point Reserve, while a natural feature in itself, has been substantially modified by European settlement over time. Mill Point Reserve was once the traditional camping and fishing grounds of the Ballaruk Aboriginal people. This was recognised by the erection of a plaque on the Mill Point Reserve by the Main Roads Department and the City of South Perth (in which the land is vested) in 1994. The plaque was a result of consultation with the custodians of the land after work clearance was required to carry out work on limestone river walls. After 12 months negotiation the plaque was prepared with words formulated in conjunction with Aboriginal people. The Aboriginal name for the area is Buryalup which was part of the Whadjuk territory. Descendants of the people who traditionally used the area include Corrie and Violet Bodney whose role as custodians for the area is also noted on the plaque. They say their link to the area is by continuous association through their great great- grandparents, Moonyel and Kunyiath. The Bodneys have memories of camping in the area as children and still fish for crab, cobbler and mullet.
